120 Students Dive into "Camp Fusion" Summer Program Blending Cross-Cultural Experiences
From June 30 to July 2, Hou Kong Middle School Affiliated Premier School organized the "Camp Fusion" summer camp, with 120 students from various secondary grades actively participating. Aimed at cultivating students' environmental awareness, cross-cultural understanding, and English skills, the camp adopted dynamic courses including Trashion (trash + fashion), dubbing activities, cooking competitions, and dance programs. Campers not only enhanced their comprehensive literacy but also gained friendships and valuable insights into global perspectives. The event was organized by the English Department of Hou Kong Premier School, guided by four intern teachers from Oregon State University, foreign teachers, and the school's English faculty.
During the 2-day program, students engaged in diverse interesting activities that integrated environmental protection activities, language learning, and cultural exploration. These included Trashion, where waste, recycled materials, or old clothing were used to create fashionable items, embodying the concept of environmental protection; Dubbing activities, which incorporated short films and vocabulary from both Eastern and Western sources to exercise English proficiency; Cooking competitions, where salads were made with a blend of Eastern and Western ingredients to foster hands-on skills; and dance sessions that combined American line dance with catchy songs. At the end of the activities, students delivered speeches in English to parents and showcased the skills they learned from summer camp. Participants stated that the camp allowed them to experience the charm of environmental conservation and cultural integration firsthand, and the various activities enabled them to go beyond textbooks and truly appreciate the richness and diversity of cross-cultural practices.
This summer camp not only built a platform for students to showcase themselves and broaden their international horizons but also provided a precious opportunity to deeply experience the collision and integration of environmental concepts and Chinese-Western cultures. Hou Kong Premier School plans to continue organizing summer camps and more meaningful activities to promote cross-cultural exchange, enhance the global competitiveness of local teenagers, and cultivate more outstanding talents with global visions.
