HKP Tech Expo: S4 Students Tackle Macau’s Challenges with Innovation and Global Vision
Secondary 4 students at Hou Kong Premier School (HKP) have taken innovation to the next level at the HKP Tech Expo on June 12, 2025, where they presented creative technological solutions to some of Macau’s most pressing local issues, such as traffic congestion and air pollution.
The students didn’t just stop at solving local problems; they also made sure their projects were aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), demonstrating a strong sense of global responsibility.
“We wanted to take what we learned in class and use it to help our community,” said Bella from S4A, whose team developed a waste management system using solar energy. “We linked our idea to SDG 13: Climate Action, and it really made us think beyond the classroom.”
From an AI-driven eco-wing for monitoring housing issues to mini-flying spaceships designed to tackle various types of pollution, students showcased not only technical skill but also a deep understanding of social and environmental challenges.
“Our project aims to raise awareness about easing Macau’s traffic congestion through drone technology,” said Nino from S4B, who helped design an all-round road monitoring system. “We connected our work to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities because we believe young people can lead the way.”
The Expo was guided and supported by the school’s English team, who emphasized communication, collaboration, and critical thinking throughout the project.
“This kind of task-based learning empowers students to use English with purpose,” said Miss Niko, one of the English teachers involved in the project. “They’re not just learning a language—they’re using it to explore global issues, propose solutions, and communicate ideas that matter.”
At HKP, our English curriculum is one where students apply a task-based learning approach. Through this project, English became a medium for real-world communication, research, collaboration, and presentation—bringing language learning to life in meaningful and impactful ways.
