Voices Echoing at HKP: Chinese and English Recitation Competition

Recently, the highly anticipated 17th Reading Festival at Premier School Affiliated to Hou Kong Middle School culminated in a successful bilingual recitation competition. This event embraced the theme of "Loving Books, Expressing Well," promoting a literate campus and involving all primary students. The competition included three rounds: class preliminaries, grade semifinals, and school finals, providing a broad platform for students to showcase their language talents.

In the lead-up to the competition, all classes actively participated, with many students eager to compete in the preliminaries. After thorough selection through class recommendations and grade semifinals, 20 Chinese and 12 English contestants advanced to the school finals. Recently, separate finals for Chinese and English were held, with all teachers and students in the primary department attending to witness this literary feast.

During the finals, the young competitors were energetic and confident. In the Chinese section, the precise pronunciation of Mandarin and the rich tones of Cantonese harmoniously complemented each other, breathing new life into classic poetry through expressive recitation. In the English section, participants showcased accurate pronunciation and smooth expression, vividly conveying the unique charm of foreign literature. The audience listened attentively, frequently erupting in warm applause, creating a lively and inviting atmosphere. This bilingual recitation competition not only enhanced students' language skills and literary appreciation but also deepened cultural confidence through bilingual reading, broadening students’ international perspectives.

In this year’s Reading Festival, students from P1 to P6 also engaged in themed reading activities such as “Candy Fantasies: Fairy Tale Drawings,” “Poetic Childhood: Fun with Poetry and Art,” “Searching for Spring: Poetry and Paintings Welcoming Spring,” “Literary Competitions: Encountering the World,” “Mountains and Rivers: Seeking Roots in Place Names,” and “Biographies: The Splendor of Great Figures.” These activities encouraged students to read together, create together, and appreciate the joy of reading.

In the future, the school will continue to host various cultural activities to help students inherit Chinese traditional culture while cultivating cross-cultural communication skills, striving to develop a new generation that combines national pride with international perspectives.
